Stuttering Therapy
Can adults with stuttering be helped?
Yes. With proper diagnosis and treatment, adults with stuttering can be helped. As they grow up, patients with fluency disorders usually develop some compensatory strategies when they speak to avoid stuttering or blocks in their speech. These strategies seem to work well with some of the individuals. However, for others, it draws more attention to their stuttering, may be more in certain situations (e.g. reporting to their boss) than in others (e.g, talking to a good friend).
There are also patients who have their stuttering problems worsen with anxiety and stress related to their work or personal relationships. If these factors are affecting the patient’s ability to benefit from the speech techniques learnt, the speech-language therapists will help the patient seek additional appropriate treatments such as counseling therapy.
