Reading and Writing Difficulties in Children
Dyslexia is a specific learning disability. Children with dyslexia have difficulty with reading and spelling despite being taught well and trying hard to learn. The cause of dyslexia is related to the differences in the processing functions of the brain for language. Dyslexia is not the same as intellectual disabilities and it can occur in children with high IQ scores. It is also different from autism, deafness, blindness or behavioral problems.

As some of the children presented with dyslexia may also have other speech and language difficulties, the speech-language therapist will identify the child’s communication profile in all modalities (listening, verbal expression, reading comprehension and written expression). Treatment will begin with the areas which lays the foundation of later development.
To target the problem of reading and writing difficulties, training on phonological awareness will often be the focus. Treatment will also involve the use of multi-sensory inputs to help learn new words. Some of the children may lack the confidence in reading and writing due to previous experiences and it is important to establish the motivation of learning in these children through appropriate and rewarding treatment activities.
