Voice problems in children
It is not uncommon to see voice problems in children. Children with their high energy levels and curiosity to explore their worlds use their voices as the means to get their ends and in the process sometimes tend to overuse or abuse them leading to problems that may take them to a speech therapist!
A normal voice should be produced with ease and good clarity. Common problems of the voice include breathiness, hoarseness, reduced intensity, reduced pitch range and discomfort while voicing or speaking speaking.
Voice problems can be caused by structural changes to the voice box (larynx) or by inappropriate vocal habits. Voice problems in children are usually caused by the latter.
Listed here are some common hazardous vocal habits that will result in voice disorders:
- mimicking of sounds in loud voice
- using inappropriate pitch levels
- excessive throat clearing and coughing
- yelling, screaming and cheering
- speaking too loudly - shouting
